Beyond the Boulevard

A City Within a City

Most visitors arrive expecting one Hollywood — the one with the stars on the sidewalk and the sign on the hill. What they find, if they venture even a few blocks off the main drag, is something far more interesting: a mosaic of communities that have been quietly building their own identities for decades. Thai Town is the only officially designated Thai district in the United States. Franklin Village is a walkable, indie-spirited village tucked between two major boulevards. Little Armenia preserves a cultural heritage that stretches back generations. Los Feliz and Silver Lake have cultivated creative scenes that attract artists, writers, and musicians from across the country. This guide introduces all eight neighborhoods worth knowing. Each one rewards a slower pace and a willingness to look past the obvious.

Thai Town: America's Only Official Thai District

‘Thai Town is not a theme park version of Thailand. It is the real thing — a community that has been feeding and sustaining the Thai diaspora in Los Angeles for decades.’

Stretching along Hollywood Boulevard between Normandie and Western Avenues, Thai Town was officially designated in 1999 — making it the only officially recognised Thai district in the United States. The neighbourhood is home to dozens of authentic restaurants, Thai grocery stores, cultural organisations, and the annual Songkran Festival that draws thousands of visitors each April.
